A soupy, intoxicating mix of fog and intrigue greeted us at the Taj Mahal at sunrise on New Year’s Day 2007. We had visited the day before during the crisp Indian winter sunlight when this mausoleum of love sparkled like a precious jewel against the backdrop of a brilliant blue sky. On this auspicious sunrise, it offered a stark contrast – a moody, powerful ode to the pang of everlasting love. As I explored every angle – largely alone – my body was awash with goosebumps as I fell under its mesmerizing spell.

Ensconced on the peninsula of the southernmost part of the Australian mainland where ancient boulders are covered in the most brilliant of yellow lichen, a single white feather had found itself a place to rest. To look at the feather, so precariously balanced between these two incredible weights you couldn’t help but fear it could be crushed at any moment. Yet, the feather delicately and defiantly holds its place happy in its new home.

A hot summer’s night on the streets of Williamsburg, New York. The smell of sizzling gourmet burgers, the clink of craft beer in glasses and rooftop tunes swirl through the air. As this woman tends to her retail ‘corner’ I am struck by the contrast with the giant hand painted billboard for the billion dollar All-American worldwide retailer looming overhead. The juxtaposition was striking and beautiful at the same time and the texture and intricacies of the scene fascinating.

At the peak of Dochula Pass, a 3100m snowy and treacherous high mountain pass to cross when travelling from the capital of Thimphu to eastern Bhutan sits 108 stupas. At first pass these memorial ‘chortens’ were covered in snow and the conditions so harsh and the visibility so poor we could not stop. On our return however the sun was shining and the beauty of these beautiful structures and their 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas was magically revealed.

The ‘African Strut’ there is nothing quite like it. In this case it has been captured out the window of a moving car on one of the few roads out of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. His sideways glance at just the right time seemingly in sync with his stride and me in the back seat of the car zooming by. All the while the traditional roadside stall buzz continues on behind. The vibrancy of the colours of Rwandan life on full display. A little slice of African rhythm and magic.

Wandering the rambling and bustling backstreets of Jodhpur, the ‘Blue City’ as it is known throughout India and the world over, I am struck by the stark contrast and resplendent beauty of this stone carving. Featuring brilliant bright orange-yellow that’s considered sacred in Indian culture and the iconic hand symbol representing courage and selflessness, on closer inspection I am mesmerised by the discovery of the delicately attached offerings of strands of fragile and graceful saffron.

Construction of the City Palace, Udaipur on the banks of Lake Pichola commenced in 1553 and was built in its renown flamboyant style over the next 400 years. Today the complex may be a rambling labyrinth of restored and original palaces within palaces but regardless, everywhere you look jewels of the past provide hints of the luxury the royal family must have once enjoyed. These majestic ornate glass tips high on the roof tops were no exception. As I watched them glisten in the late afternoon sunlight I could almost imagine beautifully dressed and jeweled courtiers, the feathers, the silk brocades, the perfumed incense, dancers, and musicians swirling in an intoxicating mix through the courtyards below.
